Invitation to submit abstracts to the conference

With great pleasure we welcome you to the 33rd All India Sociological Conference at Dharwad in Karnataka. You are invited to submit abstracts for paper presentation at the conference through any of the 21 Research Committees (RCs) of the ISS. As all paper presentations at the Conference (except those in the Symposia) will be made through RCs, interested scholars are advised to contact the Convenors of the concerned RCs for presenting papers. Two copies of the abstract of the paper in about 300-400 words should be submitted to the RC Convenors in the Abstract Form not later than 30 September 2007. Each abstract should carry the Membership Number and Number & Name of the RC to which it is submitted. Acceptance of the abstracts will be communicated by the respective RC Convenors by 15th October 2007. RC Convenors will send a copy of the abstracts received by them by 15th October to The Organising Secretary, XXXIII All India Sociological Conference .The ISS members (Life/ Ordinary/ Student) who have paid the RC Membership fee (Rs 200/- for 2 years and Rs.400 for 5 years) per Research Committee alone are allowed to present papers in the Conference.. Only the abstracts of those who register before 31st of October 2007 and submitted in the Abstract Form will be published in the Conference Souvenir.

The Registration Fee should be sent to the Organising Secretary by crossed Demand Draft drawn in favour of The Organising Secretary, 33rd All India Sociological Conference, payable at Dharwad. The delegates paying Registration Fee up to 31st October are advised to produce their receipts at the time of registration at the Conference venue.

Venue : The twin city of Dharwad-Hubli, is considered the cultural capital of North Karnataka and with a population of 8.5 lakh constitutes the second largest urban agglomeration (after Bangalore located 400 Km away) in the State. Dharwad is located in the peripheral zone of Western Ghats. It is the city of poets and musicians The Hindustani Stalwarts Shriyuths, Pt.M. Mansur, B. Rajaguru, Bhimsen Joshi, Savai Gandharva, Kumar Gandharva, Smt.Pt. Gangubai Hanagal, and the great literary legends D.R. Bendre, C. Kanavi, V.K.Gokak, Girish Karanad and a score of personalities in these areas lived and excelled in Dharwad. The city was the divisional head quarters under the Bombay Presidency under the British Raj. Located in the border area of the interior plains and Western Ghats, Dharwad serves as the main entry gate to several destinations in Western and Southern India. The Golden Quadrilateral Highway, the Bangalore-Mumbai and Vizag-Vasco rail lines pass through Dharwad. The twin city with its growth potentials, has attracted a number of industries besides institutions of higher learning in the general area of knowledge - medicine, dentistry, mental health, engineering and agriculture. There are many places of historical and tourist importance within 4 hours of drive. The climate in Dharwad during Nov-Dec.will be pleasant with the average temperature being 18 degree Celsius. The delegates are advised to carry light warm clothes.

The Host, Karnatak University with 60 years of splendid history is the second oldest university in Karnataka. It is situated on a hillock covering an area of 780 acres. It has maintained its distinctive academic excellence in the country. Having been known for maintaining its academic calendar, the university is accredited with Five Stars Status by the NAAC. The University has about 60 independent academic departments.

The Department of Sociology, established in 1957, is celebrating its Golden Jubilee this year. It has to its credit having paved the foundation of sociological research and teaching in North Karnataka in particular and Karnataka in general.

The Karnataka Sociology Association, the co- organiser of this Conference, is a registered body of the Sociological fraternity in Karnataka and has about 600 life members . It has been quite active in holding academic meetings regularly as well as protecting the academic interests of the Sociology professionals.

Travel: Dharwad has abundant transport facilities making other parts of country easily accessible. The city is well connected with all the important cities in India by Train, Road and Air.

Railway links with North India: Nizamuddin - Londa/Hubli Exp.(daily), Nizamuddin­Mysore Swarna Jayanthi Exp(weekly), H.Nizamuddin- Yashvantapur, Karnataka Samparka Kranti, Bi-weekly, Azmir-Bangalore(Bi-weekly Exp) Jodhapur-Bangalore(Bi-Weekly Exp)

Railway links with Eastern India: Howrah-Vasco-da-gama Amaravathi Express (4 days a week) Vijayawada-Hubli Amaravathi Exp.Daily.

Railway Links Western India: Gandhidham-Bangalore weekly exp. Dadar-Yashavnthapur. Chalukya/Sharavati exp. (Daily). There are Trains from Bangalore, Chennai, Vasco-da-gama, Mysore, Guntakal. every day connecting to Hubli-Dharwad.

The Road Transport is excellent. There are Hi-Tech Buses with sleeper facility from Bombay, Pune, Panjim, Bangalore, Mangalore, Gulbarga, and Sholapur, Hubli-Dharwad is served by several Indian Carriers. King Fisher and Air Deccan connect Hubli-Dharwad with their daily flights to Bangalore, Bombay, Delhi, Belgaum and other cities in India.

How to reach the conference Venue: Several long distance Trains mentioned above pass through Dharwad-Hubli Railway Junction. Hubli Airport is situated 30 Kms from the venue of the Conference. All long distance Buses pass through Dharwad city and they stop at the Court Circle from where the venue of the conference is just 3 Kms. Auto Rickshaw services are available round-the-clock from Bus Stop and also Railway Station. The Auto Rickshaw charges range around Rs.30-40.

Local Hospitality: All the delegates who register up to 31st Oct. 2007 will be provided with free accommodation in the Guest Houses, Hostels and Hotels of moderate tariff for four nights starting from 28th Nov. 2007. For those who require better accommodation the Organisers can make arrangements in hotels on payment. Necessary information may be obtained from the Organizing Secretary in this regard. Arrangements for food for all the delegates and accompanying persons (with advance information) will be made starting with dinner on 28th Nov. till 1st Dec. 2007.

Sight seeing: The Organizing Committee will arrange conducted Tours on 2nd Dec. 2007 only on advance payment. Interested delegates are advised to send separate crossed DD to the Organizing Secretary drawn in favour of The Organizing Secretary, XXXIII All India Sociological Conference (conducted Tours) payable at Dharwad along with their Registration Form. Conducted tours will be organized to (1) Goa; (2) Bijapur; (3) Hampi; (4) Badami-Pattadakallu-Aihole, (5) Kudalasangam, (6) Banavasi-Jog Falls. and (7) Muradeshwar, All these place are located within 4-5 hours journey by road from Dharwad. Goa is the most sought after tourist place and is known for the beautiful beaches. Bijapur, a historical place. has the Heritage Site, Golgumbaz, the biggest independent dome ever built in Asia. Hampi, the seat of power of Vijayanagara Empire of the 15th Century A.D. is declared as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is famous for its Rock-Cut monolithic chariot, sculptured statues and Carved temples etc. Badami-Pattadakallu-Aihole has the historical places which are of the status of World Heritage Sites and best known for its monolithic architecture. Kudalasangama, the confluence of three rivers, at which Lord Basava, the founder of Veerashaivism and the champion of the movement for social equality in the 12 century A.D. attained salvation. Banavasi was the capital of first Kannada rulers. Joga falls is the second highest waterfall in the World. Murdeshwar, the coastal town has the tallest statue of lord Shiva built on a huge hillock on the Arabian coast. AC. Bus fare for each tour is Rs. 700/- (inclusive of breakfast, lunch and dinner and entry fees whereever necessary)
